How do I join the KC North ARES Ham club?

Joining is easy! Simply visit our Home Page to sign up. We welcome enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to experienced operators, or show up at one of our meetings.

What equipment do I need to get started?

A basic handheld transceiver is a great starting point. Our community provides resources and mentorship to help you choose the right gear for your goals.

Are there regular community meetups?

Yes, we hold monthly in-person meetings to share news, knowledge, skills, expertise and friendship once a month on the 4th Thursday at the Smithville #2 Firehouse, Smithville, MO  You are welcome!

What is a Net?

The first net was probably formed as soon as two hams went on the air. Sometimes, the nets are strictly for pleasure. Other nets are more utilitarian, such as those for traffic handling, emergency services, and weather spotting/reporting.  The above nets are for getting to know other hams and to learn.

Would you like to become part of our club?

There are no dues required to be a member of our club. Just attend a meeting to find out what the club is all about.

Getting Started

How do I actually get my ham radio license?

It's straightforward! You'll need to pass a multiple-choice Technician Class exam. We offer study guides, mentoring (we call them Elmers), and local testing sessions to help you through the process.  An Elmer can help you get the testing set up.

What's the best first radio for a beginner?

Most beginners start with a dual-band handheld transceiver (HT). They are affordable, portable, and perfect for checking into local nets and participating in ARES events around Kansas City.

Can I attend a meeting before I have my license?

Absolutely! Visitors are always welcome. Coming to a meeting is the best way to meet the team, see the gear in action, and get all your questions answered in a friendly, supportive environment.
